I am currently working on a new script. The working title is “Desperately Seeking Samuel”. This is a monologue, as are most of my current theatrical undertakings.
The first draft is complete, although I have reworked it
several times already. This is the story of an older gay man who has forgotten
the story of his life. It unfolds as he finds himself trapped in a confined
space. He gradually and rather disjointedly puts the pieces together.
I am not sure whether this work will be suitable for stage or
film, or either or both. I have written it for stage. At first, I envisioned it
in the theatre of the absurd genre. But in my opinion, it does not fit neatly
there. Perhaps it is a hybrid.
There is enough in life that is depressing. I do not like to
write depressing plays, even if there is some tragedy in it. But I do not write
light comedies either. Humour can be infused into almost any situation. Sometimes
it works, sometimes not. I was worried this script might be on the depressing edge
of the spectrum. However, a first reviewer has said she did not find it
depressing. That is encouraging.
I will continue working on this script over the winter.
